French National Assembly Elects New Chairman

The French National Assembly has convened for the first time since the early parliamentary elections and begun the process of electing its chairman. In the first round of voting, communist deputy André Chassaigne led with 200 votes.

In the second round, incumbent chairman Yaël Braun-Pivet of President Macron's party Renaissance received 210 votes, ahead of Chassaigne's 202 votes. The election is expected to continue late into the evening.

The session began with a tribute to the seven victims of a recent apartment fire in Nice, possibly linked to drug trafficking in the area. The new or re-elected deputies took their seats in alphabetical order, as party factions will be formed later.

The formation of eleven factions in the National Assembly suggests the possibility of a new governing majority. President Macron called for the elections following the success of the right-wing populist party RN in the European elections.

The left-wing coalition, Nouvelle Front populaire, which won the most seats in the parliamentary elections, has not yet agreed on a candidate for the position of prime minister. Macron's allies maintained control of the National Assembly with the support of conservatives, despite losses in the European and parliamentary elections.

Yaël Braun-Pivet, Macron's ally, was re-elected as the chairman of the National Assembly, benefiting from the votes of the conservative Republicans (LR) and the center-right party Horizons.

Yaël Braun-Pivet, Macron's ally, was re-elected as Parliament Speaker, despite the electoral success of the left-wing alliance New Popular Front. The candidate of the left-wing alliance, Andre Chassaigne, narrowly lost. Mathilde Panot of the left-wing party La France Insoumise criticized the election as an "anti-democratic power play".
