Airport operations in Leipzig/Halle normalized after blockade by climate activists
The airport operations at Leipzig/Halle have returned to normal after being blocked by climate activists. According to an airport spokesperson, there were no impacts on passenger traffic on Thursday morning.
However, 19 flights in the cargo area were unable to take off in the early hours. The blockade was carried out by activists from the group 'Last Generation' who glued themselves to the runway.
The last activists were removed from the security area at around 5 am. The activists are now being investigated for suspected vandalism, trespassing, endangering air traffic, and unauthorized presence in the security area.
The 'Last Generation' stated that activists entered the Leipzig/Halle airport grounds around midnight to demonstrate for an international fossil fuel phase-out agreement. Similar protests had occurred at Frankfurt Airport and Cologne/Bonn Airport last week.
