Venezuela: Opposition Politician Machado Calls for Further Protests

Following the controversial presidential election in Venezuela, opposition politician Maria Corina Machado has called for more protests against the officially announced victory of incumbent Nicolas Maduro. Machado, who was banned from participating in the election, supports opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia and claims that he clearly defeated Maduro.

The opposition has released large amounts of data showing Urrutia's victory. However, the government-backed electoral authority declared Maduro the winner, leading to protests and violent crackdowns.

International doubts have been raised regarding the election results, with Peru recognizing Urrutia as the legitimate Venezuelan president. Several countries, including the US, Brazil, and the EU, have called for detailed vote counts.

The US diplomat for Latin America, Brian Nichols, stated that Urrutia had clearly beaten Maduro by receiving millions of votes. Despite these concerns, a joint resolution by the Organization of American States calling for immediate release of detailed election results was not agreed upon.

Maduro has threatened to arrest Machado and her team, causing her to fear for her life and go into hiding. The situation in Venezuela remains tense, with ongoing protests, arrests, and diplomatic tensions between Venezuela and other countries.
