The US Democrats have begun their vote on the official nomination of Vice President Kamala Harris as their presidential candidate. The electronic vote will take place over five days and Harris is expected to secure the nomination with overwhelming support.
She can anticipate strong party support in her candidacy against former President Donald Trump in the November 5th election. The selection of a vice presidential candidate is seen as a strategically important decision, aimed at winning crucial votes in swing states.
Possible running mates for Harris include the governors of Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and Minnesota, as well as the Arizona senator and the US Secretary of Transportation. Harris is also expected to announce her vice presidential pick by Monday.
The official nomination of presidential candidates typically takes place at party conventions, but the Democratic convention in August will now serve to celebrate Harris' nomination, as it was already decided beforehand. The virtual vote on the presidential candidate was planned prior to President Biden's withdrawal from the race, due to a law in Ohio requiring candidates to be officially named by August 7th.
