Baerbock sets off on Middle East trip - Minister pushes for ceasefire agreement
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has embarked on a new Middle East trip, urging for a negotiated solution to the Gaza conflict. Baerbock expressed concern over the Israeli army's major operation in the occupied West Bank and warned against an escalation of violence.
She emphasized that negotiations for a two-state solution are the only option for lasting peace. Baerbock plans to meet with Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz, and Defense Minister Joav Gallant.
She also intends to speak with relatives of the Hamas hostages and meet with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Mustafa in Ramallah. This is Baerbock's eleventh trip to the region since the start of the Gaza war.
The negotiations for a ceasefire agreement and the release of Hamas hostages have been at a standstill for months, putting pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Baerbock condemns the Hamas attack on Southern Israel and the heavy military intervention by Israel in the Gaza Strip, resulting in numerous casualties.
