Brandenburg State Election: SPD Facing Historic Defeat, Greens and Left Party in Jeopardy

The upcoming state election in Brandenburg could mark a historic defeat for the ruling SPD party, with polls suggesting that the far-right AfD could become the strongest force. While the SPD is predicted to receive more than 20% of the votes, it would be a new development for them not to come in first.

The fate of Minister-President Dietmar Woidke hangs in the balance, as he has declared this election as his make-or-break moment. Despite the possibility of the AfD winning the most seats, it is still realistic for the SPD to form a government as other parties have ruled out a coalition with the far-right party.

However, the SPD would be far from securing an absolute majority with their predicted 27%. The current Kenia coalition between the SPD, CDU, and Greens is also uncertain, as recent polls indicate that it would only narrowly pass the threshold.

Other parties, such as the CDU, Greens, and Left Party, are also trembling as they face potential challenges in securing seats in the Landtag. The outcome of the election could also be influenced by the newly formed BSW Brandenburg alliance and the Free Voters party.
