Russian Disinformation Targets Kamala Harris

Recent investigations by Microsoft reveal an alarming increase in Russian disinformation efforts aimed at U.S. presidential candidate Kamala Harris. The Kremlin-linked group Storm-1516 has produced two fabricated videos designed to undermine Harris’s campaign alongside her running mate, Tim Walz. One video depicts supposed Harris supporters attacking an individual at a Trump rally, while another features an actor falsely accusing Harris of causing a hit-and-run accident in 2011 that left a girl paralyzed. Both videos have garnered millions of views, amplifying their potential impact on public perception.

Additionally, another Russian entity, Storm-1679, has shifted its focus from a previous fake news initiative related to the Paris Olympics to disseminating discrediting content about Harris. This strategic pivot underscores a broader pattern of misinformation tactics employed by Russian actors in the lead-up to the November presidential election.

In response to these manipulative efforts, U.S. authorities have condemned Russia for its attempts to interfere in the electoral process and have imposed sanctions on several officials associated with the Russian state media outlet RT.
