Markus Söder, the Minister-President of Bavaria, is championing Munich’s bid to host the 2040 Olympics, drawing inspiration from Paris 2024. Söder envisions an Olympic event without new sports venues or monumental constructions, similar to Paris' sustainable approach. This ambition follows Munich's previous attempts to host the 2018 Winter Olympics and aims to leverage the recently renovated Olympic Stadium. Additionally, Söder is supporting Munich's bids for the 2029 or 2031 Athletics World Championships. The next Olympic Games are set for 2028 in Los Angeles and 2032 in Brisbane, with the host for 2036 yet to be decided.
Söder’s proposal aligns with broader support within Germany, including endorsements from Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, and Leipzig. He also aims to improve conditions for athletes in the Bavarian police force and increase rewards for Olympic medalists. The initiative, revealed during a CSU meeting at Kloster Banz, seeks to revitalize Munich's Olympic spirit and avoid the pitfalls of overbuilding.
Local support is crucial, and Munich's second mayor, Dominik Krause, also backs the bid. The city plans to involve its residents through a public vote to gauge support for the initiative. This bid reflects a desire to replicate the enthusiasm and success seen in Paris while ensuring fiscal responsibility and minimal environmental impact.
