Flood Crisis Claims Lives and Challenges Recovery

The devastating floods sweeping through Central and Eastern Europe have tragically resulted in at least 23 fatalities. Although the situation in Austria shows signs of improvement, with the government earmarking 45 million euros for reconstruction efforts, other areas remain under severe threat. The Elbe River in Dresden has reached alarming levels, prompting a warning of the second highest alert. While water levels in the Neisse, Spree, and Black Elster rivers are gradually receding, conditions in Bavaria are also showing signs of relief.

Saxony has mobilized aid to support the distressed region of Lower Silesia in Poland, contributing 50,000 euros in assistance. As the Elbe's peak flows into Saxony from the Czech Republic, concerns persist about ongoing risks, with forecasts suggesting the flooding could last until the end of September. Current levels indicate a significant rise, with measurements recorded at 6.63 meters in Schöna, far exceeding normal levels.
