Germany Calls for Enhanced Dementia Support

On World Alzheimer's Day, experts from the German Alzheimer's Society and the German Society for Geriatric Psychiatry have emphasized the urgent need for better diagnostics and support for the 1.8 million people in Germany living with dementia, predominantly Alzheimer's.

They call for comprehensive community care plans and strategies to address the care crisis. While new medications like Leqembi and amyloid antibody therapies offer hope, they currently benefit only a few.

The experts stress the importance of treating underlying conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes, which can exacerbate dementia symptoms. Moreover, early detection methods, such as a newly developed blood test identifying Alzheimer’s risk through molecular fingerprints, are crucial.

Music therapy also shows promise in improving cognitive abilities and reducing symptoms like depression and agitation. With the number of dementia cases rising, it is vital to develop and implement effective support systems and treatment options to improve the quality of life for those affected.
