Earth's Temporary Mini-Moon: 2024 PT5

In late September 2024, Earth will briefly host a second moon, known as asteroid 2024 PT5. This 10-11 meter fragment will orbit our planet in a unique horseshoe path from September 29 to November 25. Discovered by scientists at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, PT5 is part of the Arjuna asteroid group, which follows an Earth-like trajectory.

While it will return in the future, specifically in 2055, there is no current threat of collision with Earth. The event highlights the dynamic nature of our solar system, as even small asteroids can have intriguing interactions with our planet.
