Recent surveys reveal a significant shift in consumer behavior in Germany, with a growing emphasis on animal welfare, organic seals, and plant-based products. According to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Minister Cem Özdemir, transparency and freedom of choice are crucial for consumers.
The Nutrition Report 2024, an annual survey by Forsa, highlights these changes. The share of buyers choosing products with animal welfare labels has surged from 36% to 65%, while those opting for organic seals rose from 47% to 59%.
Additionally, the consumption of vegetarian and vegan alternatives has increased from 29% to 39%. This trend underscores a broader societal move towards sustainability and health consciousness.
Özdemir stresses the importance of consumer choice in dietary habits. The report also indicates a decline in meat consumption, with more people identifying as flexitarians.
Younger consumers are particularly mindful of price and sustainability, reflecting a generational shift towards more responsible consumption patterns. Moreover, the awareness and influence of food labels like the Nutri-Score are on the rise, guiding healthier purchasing decisions.
As Germany heads towards 2030, these changes suggest a continued focus on sustainable and ethical food choices, driven by consumer demand for better animal welfare, regional sources, and healthier alternatives.
