A German family on vacation in Montecatini Val di Cecina near Pisa faced a devastating flood when the Sterza stream overflowed. The grandmother and her five-month-old grandchild were swept away and are currently missing.
The grandfather made a desperate attempt to save them but was unsuccessful. The rest of the family managed to escape to the roof of their holiday home.
Over 221 mm of rain fell in six hours, causing widespread flooding in Tuscany and other regions like Emilia-Romagna and Marche, which led to the evacuation of 2500 people. Rescue operations involving divers, dog handlers, and firefighters are ongoing.
Meanwhile, the affected areas are beginning recovery and cleanup efforts.
