CJEU Upholds Denial of MEP Seats for Catalan Separatists

The European Court of Justice (CJEU) has rejected the appeal by Carles Puigdemont and Toni Comín to be recognized as members of the European Parliament. Despite winning in the European Parliament elections, their refusal to take the constitutional oath prevented them from taking office.

The court ruled it could not go beyond the list of elected members provided by Spanish authorities. Their arrest warrants, upheld by the Spanish Supreme Court, accuse them of embezzlement related to Catalonia's 2017 secession attempt.

The recent amnesty law does not apply to them, further complicating their legal standing. The Secretary General of the 'Junts' party vowed to continue fighting to honor the election results.

The tension has paralyzed movement between Spain and France as police intensify their search for Puigdemont. The legislative and regional elections in Catalonia are seen as a test of the health crisis's impact on the secessionist movement.

The Catalan Parliament remains steadfast in supporting the right to self-determination.
