Global Powers Push for Lebanon Ceasefire Amid Rising Tensions

The United States, France, and several Arab and European nations are advocating for a 21-day ceasefire in Lebanon to halt the escalating conflict between Hezbollah and Israel. The effort seeks to provide a window for diplomatic negotiations, with the aim of preventing a broader regional war.

The United Nations Secretary-General has warned that the situation in Lebanon could spiral into a catastrophe if immediate action is not taken. The Lebanese Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, has backed the ceasefire proposal, urging Israel to withdraw from occupied territories.

However, the Israeli opposition leader has called for only a seven-day truce, warning of full-force retaliation if violated. The conflict has already resulted in significant casualties, with Israeli airstrikes killing 72 people recently.

Both Israel and Hezbollah have shown reluctance to accept the ceasefire without additional conditions, complicating the prospects for peace. The international community is pressing for a diplomatic resolution, but skepticism remains about the ability to control the warring factions and achieve a lasting ceasefire.
