Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Arugula in Europe
A significant outbreak of Salmonella Umbilo has been reported in Germany, Austria, and Denmark. Authorities suspect arugula from Italy as the potential source.
Germany has recorded 98 cases, with numbers expected to rise. No deaths have been reported, but severe cases are occurring in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.
Symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal pain, cramps, nausea, vomiting, and fever. The outbreak, which began in July, has impacted all German states except Bremen and Saarland.
Although contaminated arugula samples have been identified in Italy, not all cases are believed to have been documented. The Robert Koch Institute warns of a higher true infection count and advises caution in consuming arugula.
