Putin's Nuclear Doctrine Shake-Up Raises Global Concerns

Russian President Vladimir Putin has revised Russia's nuclear strategy, prompting significant international unease. This change addresses the potential use of Western long-range weapons by Ukraine, which has led to heightened tensions.

Putin warned that attacks on Russia or Belarus, regardless of the weapons used, could justify a nuclear response. He emphasized that nuclear weapons would be a last resort to protect state sovereignty, but the scenarios for their use have now expanded to include conventional massive airstrikes with fighter jets, cruise missiles, drones, or hypersonic weapons.

This adjustment lowers the threshold for nuclear engagement and extends Russia's nuclear umbrella to Belarus. Western nations, particularly the USA, France, and the UK, face increased risks of becoming targets.

In response, US officials, including CIA Director William Burns, have conveyed potential consequences to Russian counterparts. The West remains divided on supplying Ukraine with long-range weapons due to fears of escalation.
