European Commission Appoints Experts for AI Act Development
The European Commission has selected 13 experts to draft regulations for General Purpose Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) including models like ChatGPT and Google Gemini. This team, which includes prominent figures such as Rishi Bommasani, Marietje Schaake, and Yoshua Bengio, will establish a roadmap for the AI Act's Implementing Rules by April 2025. This act, effective from last month, imposes strict regulations on GPAI providers starting August 2025. The AI Office is tasked with creating software to help companies comply with these new rules.
The appointment process has faced calls for greater transparency from MEPs Axel Voss, Svenja Hahn, and Kim van Sparrentak. Additionally, the first public hearing on the AI regulation development will see participation from around 1,000 stakeholders.
