European Arms Companies Open Sites in Ukraine Amid War
The ongoing war in Ukraine, now in its third year, has prompted several European arms companies to establish operations within the country. This move aims to provide faster and more cost-effective ammunition supplies and to facilitate the maintenance of military vehicles on site.
Among these companies is KNDS, a German-French defense consortium, which has opened a subsidiary in Kyiv. This initiative, part of a German-French governmental project, will help maintain and repair around 800 military vehicles, including Leopard 1 and 2 tanks and other artillery.
Additionally, efforts are underway to produce 155-mm artillery ammunition and spare parts locally. This development is crucial as Ukraine continues to resist Russian forces, particularly in the Donbas region, where Russian tanks have suffered significant losses.
Despite the strategic importance, German companies remain infrequently involved in Ukraine-related projects, mainly due to financing and insurance challenges.
