Germany's Climate Goals: Urgent Need for Acceleration
A recent study by the Bertelsmann Foundation highlights that Germany is lagging behind in its efforts to transition to clean energy, transport, and heating compared to other European countries. Denmark and Norway are making significant strides, suggesting that full decarbonization by mid-century is achievable.
In contrast, Germany and the UK are not on track to complete their transition to renewable electricity, heat, and transport in time. The study, conducted with the Potsdam Institute for Sustainability, underscores the need for better coordination of political goals, regulations, and infrastructure changes.
Germany's progress is hindered by inadequate power grid expansion and slow adoption of electric vehicles due to high costs and insufficient charging infrastructure. To meet its climate goals, Germany must accelerate its exit from gas and oil heating and double the annual installation of heat pumps.
Enhanced policies, state subsidies, and public awareness are essential to drive these changes and achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
