Paris Hikes Parking Fees for Heavy Vehicles
Starting in October, Paris will impose significantly higher parking fees for vehicles over 1.6 tons. This measure, supported by a 54.5% approval in a citizen survey, exempts residents, tradespeople, and the disabled.
The city justifies the move with environmental protection, space management, and traffic safety. License plate recognition will enforce the new fees, which can reach up to 225 euros for six hours.
The initiative is part of a broader transport transition that includes closing riverside roads, expanding cycle paths, introducing a speed limit of 30 km/h, reducing speeds on the Périphérique, and ending the e-scooter rental service. These changes aim to address the ecological impact and improve urban mobility, despite some opposition from the transport ministry.
German cities like Koblenz, Tübingen, and Hannover are considering similar measures.
