Stricter Sanctions for Basic Income Recipients Announced

The German government is implementing stricter measures for citizens receiving basic income, known as Bürgergeld, to increase employment participation. New rules stipulate that those who refuse a deemed reasonable job, training, or integration measure without valid reasons will face a 30% reduction in their benefits for three months.

This is a significant increase from the current 10% penalty for one month for the first infraction. Repeated refusals can lead to further reductions, and in severe cases, temporary cessation of benefits.

Additionally, the definition of 'reasonable' jobs now includes positions requiring longer commutes. Missing a scheduled appointment with the job center without a valid reason will also result in a 30% cut for one month, up from the current 10%.

The grace period for personal assets protection is being reduced from twelve to six months. Measures to combat undeclared work among basic income recipients are being reinforced.

Job centers will be required to report suspected cases to the customs authorities, who handle investigations into illegal employment. These changes, part of the government's growth initiative, aim to encourage more people to enter the workforce.

They will take effect in January 2025, pending parliamentary approval. The reforms also include a €1000 bonus for long-term unemployed individuals who secure regular employment.

These measures reflect a shift towards more stringent policies to ensure that citizens make greater efforts to find employment and comply with job center regulations.
