Europe's Protests Mark Gaza War Anniversary

On the eve of the anniversary of the Gaza War, numerous European cities witnessed significant demonstrations in support of Palestinians. In Berlin, protests began at Platz der Luftbrücke, moving towards the Brandenburg Gate with a largely peaceful turnout of around a thousand participants. Similarly, thousands gathered in London, carrying Palestinian and Lebanese flags, calling for a ceasefire and the cessation of arms sales to Israel. The march featured notable figures like former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn.

In Rome, however, the demonstrations escalated into violent clashes. Protesters hurled bottles and firecrackers at police, prompting the use of tear gas and water cannons, with injuries reported on both sides. Protests also took place in several French cities, Dublin, and other locations globally, all echoing demands for peace and solidarity with Palestinians.

The conflict's origins trace back to an unprecedented Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2022, which resulted in significant casualties and hostages. Israel's military response in Gaza has led to a staggering number of Palestinian deaths, with figures exceeding 41,800 according to sources in Gaza. Additionally, tension along the Israel-Lebanon border intensified following increased Hezbollah attacks, especially after the reported death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

As Europe grappled with these demonstrations, calls for peace and ceasefire resonated, with leaders like the Pope and the German Chancellor urging for dialogue. Meanwhile, concerns over rising antisemitism and violence emerged, as authorities vowed to address these challenges amid ongoing protests and commemorations across the continent.
