Rwanda has initiated a vaccination campaign in response to the Marburg virus outbreak, which has reported 46 cases and 12 fatalities. The campaign targets healthcare workers, individuals at risk, and those who have been in contact with infected persons.

The first cases emerged within healthcare settings, prompting an investigation to trace the infection's source. The Marburg virus, known to originate from fruit bats, spreads through contact with infected bodily fluids or contaminated surfaces.

Without treatment, the infection can be lethal, presenting symptoms such as fever, muscle pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and severe bleeding. The vaccines, sourced from the Sabin Institute, are part of a Phase-2 trial, as no authorized vaccine or treatment currently exists.

With the virus's high fatality rate of up to 88%, the urgency for effective measures is clear. Rwanda's proactive approach may serve as a crucial step in controlling this deadly outbreak.
