Concerns Over BPA in Canned Baked Beans
Recent findings from Öko-Test reveal alarming levels of bisphenol A (BPA) in many canned baked beans, including some organic options. Out of 20 products tested, 14 contained elevated BPA levels, with four cans rated as poor.
BPA is classified as reprotoxic, raising concerns about its potential to cause hormonal damage. Regulatory limits exist, allowing a maximum of 50 μg/kg in food and 4 μg/kg per day per body weight.
In contrast, five glass-packaged products received high marks for safety. Notably, major brands available at Rewe, Rossmann, and Edeka showed better results in this study, echoing previous findings related to canned corn.
These results underscore the need for consumers to be vigilant about the contents of their food.
