AI in Education: A Growing Trend Among Teachers

A recent survey reveals that artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a significant tool in education, with over half of teachers incorporating it into their teaching methods. Another 28% plan to adopt AI soon, while only 11% reject its use altogether. Educators are leveraging AI for various purposes, such as knowledge transfer, lesson planning, and task correction. Despite this, 37% of teachers prohibit students from using AI for homework, though 80% believe students should learn to utilize these technologies.

Digital equipment in schools ranges from projectors, notebooks, and PCs to interactive whiteboards. However, only a small fraction, about 10%, have access to 3D printers. Traditional tools like overhead projectors are still in use by 19% of teachers, and 3% frequently use smartphones in their teaching.

The survey highlights significant challenges within the education sector, including teacher shortages, overwork, and a lack of a cohesive digitization strategy. Despite these hurdles, a vast majority, 88%, view digitization as an opportunity, although 10% perceive it as a risk.

Bitkom CEO Bernhard Rohleder emphasizes the need for schools to equip students with AI knowledge, underscoring the importance of familiarizing children with these technologies. As AI continues to integrate into everyday life, the education sector is urged to keep pace, ensuring that both teachers and students can navigate and benefit from this technological evolution.
