Brazil Rescinds Ban on X Platform

Brazil's Supreme Court has lifted the ban on the platform X, formerly known as Twitter, following its compliance with court orders. The decision came after X paid fines totaling approximately $5.2 million and appointed a legal representative.

The ban, which also impacted Elon Musk's Starlink satellite service, was initially imposed due to the platform's failure to address misinformation and hate speech. Judge Alexandre de Moraes, who approved the reinstatement, emphasized the platform's obligation to operate within legal parameters.

The ruling allows X to resume its services in a country with a significant user base of 20 to 40 million. This conflict stemmed from broader concerns about misinformation and its implications for democracy in Brazil.

Brazilian President Lula expressed concerns about the platform's role in undermining democratic processes. X stated its commitment to uphold free speech while adhering to legal standards.

Brazil says Musk's X could resume services in country
Brazil's Supreme Court, led by Justice Alexandre de Moraes, lifted a ban on X, formerly Twitter, after the platform complied with rulings, including appointing lawyer Rachel Conceicao and paying $3.28 million/€3 million in 18.35 million real fines in late September. X, with 20-40 million users, was blocked over a row with owner Elon Musk on misinformation and Musk's Starlink; the rift was triggered by X's non-compliance with court orders to address hate speech.
