Global Crisis of Child Sexual Violence

A UNICEF report reveals a harrowing reality: hundreds of millions of children worldwide are victims of sexual violence. This pervasive issue affects approximately 370 million girls and young women, with numbers climbing to a staggering 650 million when considering online and verbal abuse. The problem is particularly acute in sub-Saharan Africa, East and Southeast Asia, Central and South Asia, and even Europe and North America. Most assaults occur during adolescence, often perpetrated by familiar individuals in environments presumed safe.

The trauma inflicted on survivors is profound, leading to long-lasting psychological effects, including anxiety, depression, and difficulties in forming healthy relationships. In conflict zones, where children are especially vulnerable, the rates are alarmingly high. UNICEF's Executive Director, Catherine Russell, denounces this violence as a "stain on our moral conscience." The report, released on the International Day of the Girl Child, calls for societal and cultural changes to combat this scourge. A global conference in Colombia aims to address these issues, pushing for an end to child sexual violence by 2030.
