Rising Border Controls Challenge Schengen's Open Borders

The Schengen Area, once a symbol of open borders in Europe, is facing significant challenges as several EU countries reintroduce temporary border controls. Nations such as Sweden, Austria, Italy, France, Slovenia, Denmark, and Norway cite internal security threats, particularly terrorism and gang violence, as reasons for these measures. Germany has also bolstered its border enforcement following political shifts and a recent violent incident.

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser is keen on continuing these controls to curb irregular migration and thwart criminal activities. An agreement with Denmark aims to simplify border checks, especially in rail transport, while respecting each nation's sovereignty. This cooperation highlights efforts to enhance cross-border policing without infringing on national jurisdiction.

The situation has prompted discussions about external processing centers for asylum seekers, a concept supported by leaders like Hungary's Viktor Orbán. However, this approach requires partnering countries, making it a complex proposition.

Recent operations by the German Federal Police have resulted in the execution of 27 arrest warrants, detection of 73 unauthorized entries, and prevention of four human trafficking attempts. These efforts underscore the temporary suspension of Schengen principles, as controls are enforced at borders with Austria, Poland, and other neighboring countries.

Germany also proposes expedited asylum processes at airports for applicants from countries with low acceptance rates. This initiative aims to set a precedent for EU-wide migration reforms, balancing humanitarian standards with the need to limit irregular entries. As border checks persist, their impact will be carefully evaluated to decide on their future, potentially extending into 2025.
