Energy Consumption and Environmental Impact of Crematories in Berlin

Berlin's crematories are significant energy consumers, utilizing 7.5 million kilowatt hours annually for 15,500 cremations in 2023. This results in a staggering total emission of 3,062 tons of CO2, equating to 0.2 tons per cremation. The crematory facilities in Ruhleben and Baumschulenweg are particularly notable, with energy consumption comparable to the annual output of a household.

However, energy-efficient renovations have led to a reduction of 1,204 tons of CO2 emissions. Additionally, the introduction of solar power in 2025 is projected to further cut emissions by an estimated 50 tons.

These efforts highlight the pressing need for improved sustainability in the cremation process.
