Chancellor Scholz Advocates for Collective Bargaining Law Amid DGB's Anniversary

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz marked the 75th anniversary of the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) by emphasizing its role in achieving labor milestones such as the five-day workweek and eight-hour workday. Scholz highlighted the importance of strong unions in securing benefits like paid leave, job protection, and wage increases, attributing these achievements to the dedication of countless union members. He stressed the ongoing need for robust unions, especially in navigating the challenges brought by digitalization and industrial modernization.

During his message, Scholz advocated for the contentious Tariftreuegesetz, a law that mandates federal contracts only be awarded to companies adhering to collective bargaining agreements. This legislation aims to ensure fair pay practices across industries. However, its implementation has sparked debate within the government coalition. While the SPD supports the proposal, Finance Minister Christian Lindner of the FDP criticized it as inconsistent with coalition agreements.

President Frank-Walter Steinmeier also recognized the DGB's critical role in modernizing society. He underscored the union's contributions to promoting social justice, economic transformation towards climate neutrality, and digital adaptation.
