The French government has unveiled plans to introduce a stricter immigration law by early 2025. This proposal aims to extend the detention period for undocumented migrants from 90 to 210 days. The government argues this extension is necessary to enhance national security, especially for those deemed dangerous. Government spokesperson Maud Bregeon emphasized the importance of removing any taboos regarding the safety of French citizens.
Previously, a similar immigration law passed in January 2024 faced significant challenges. It was met with widespread public protests and intense debates, which led to major parts being rejected by the Constitutional Council due to non-compliance. The former law also caused political turbulence, resulting in the resignation of Health Minister Aurélien Rousseau. The upcoming proposal seeks to rectify these issues by revisiting the rejected articles and aligning more closely with right-wing demands.
The current administration, led by conservative Prime Minister Michel Barnier, lacks a parliamentary majority, suggesting that the new law might provoke heated discussions and potential opposition. Socialist Party leader Olivier Faure criticized the government's plans, labeling them as a political gift to the extreme right.
Despite these hurdles, the government is determined to move forward, aiming for a broad consensus while avoiding alliances with the far-right National Rally. This approach reflects an attempt to balance stringent immigration controls with constitutional adherence, hoping to address France's evolving security concerns and socio-political landscape.
