Climate Activist Fined for Protest Actions

Lilli Gomez, a prominent climate activist from the group Letzte Generation, has been fined 4,200 euros by the Tiergarten District Court. The 24-year-old was convicted for participating in a street blockade in Treptow and vandalizing a Christmas tree in Berlin-Mitte by spraying it with orange paint from a fire extinguisher. The court acknowledged her actions as peaceful and altruistic but ultimately deemed them ineffective in contributing to climate protection.

The judge considered Gomez's previous conviction while determining the penalty, leading to a sentence of 280 daily rates of 15 euros each. Despite her defense attorney's plea for acquittal, the court upheld the fine, emphasizing the need to address the legal implications of her actions, which included coercion, resistance to law enforcement, and public property damage.

The protest actions were part of a broader movement by Letzte Generation, aimed at drawing attention to urgent climate issues.
