Inadequate Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure in Germany

Image used under license from Shutterstock.com

The current state of electric vehicle charging stations at German motorway service areas is far from satisfactory. A recent ADAC assessment highlights a significant lack of high-performance charging options, with only a minority of facilities featuring chargers that exceed 300 kW. This shortfall results in a reliance on slower stations, often providing under 150 kW, which leads to frustratingly long charging times for users.

Out of 40 assessed locations, only 21 offered any fast charging capabilities, and just four of those met the high-performance criteria. Additionally, the report indicates that practical issues, such as improper parking at charging spots and limited payment options—often restricted to QR codes—further exacerbate the difficulties for electric vehicle owners. Many locations also lack adequate shelter from the elements, which is crucial for user convenience.

The deficiencies in charging infrastructure pose serious challenges to the growth of electromobility in Germany, threatening the government's ambitious targets of achieving 15 million electric vehicles and a million charging points by 2030. With many service areas struggling to provide sufficient power and number of charging stations, the frustration among electric vehicle users is likely to increase, hindering broader adoption and acceptance of electric vehicles in the long term. Immediate improvements are essential to modernize these facilities and meet the demands of a growing electric vehicle market.

ADAC Survey: Charging Stations for Electric Vehicles at Rest Stops Often Mediocre

Environment
Highway rest stops in Germany often offer inadequate charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. Many facilities have no or only weak charging stations under 150 kW. Only a few facilities have high-performance charging stations over 300 kW. In addition, there are often not enough charging stations, which are frequently blocked by illegally parked vehicles.

ADAC criticizes charging infrastructure at rest stops | heise autos

Environment
The electric vehicle charging infrastructure in Germany is growing, but problems remain: only 3 out of 40 rest stops are without charging points; 21 have at least 150 kW, but 16 only 50 kW; the cost of the medium-voltage connection burdens the operators; ADAC demands at least 10 charging points with 150 kW per parking lot.
