Rising Gas Network Fees Impact German Households

German households are facing a significant hike in gas network fees, with increases reaching up to 56%. This surge is primarily due to a decision by the Federal Network Agency, allowing operators to factor potential network shutdowns from 2035 into their costs. As a result, consumers are expected to see an average price rise of 5%. New customers have already experienced a price increase of 0.9 cents per kilowatt-hour since the start of the year, adding approximately 13.50 euros to annual bills.

The current average gas price stands at 11.2 cents per kilowatt-hour. However, households on unfavorable contracts could save hundreds of euros annually by switching providers. The regions most affected by these hikes include Brandenburg, Bremen, Lower Saxony, Saxony, and Saxony-Anhalt, where prices could jump by up to 43%.

For those considering a switch, it is advisable to look for contracts with price guarantees and adjustment clauses. Consumers should also be cautious of signing agreements at their doorstep, as some dubious operators are exploiting this method.

In contrast to the rising gas fees, electricity network charges for private consumers are decreasing by up to 9%. Despite this, the overall energy cost burden remains a concern, especially with the expanding emission trading that will include buildings and traffic from 2027. As gas network fees currently constitute over 10% of the total gas price, these increases are directly passed on to customers, exacerbating the financial strain on households reliant on gas for heating.

FAQ: Why heating with gas and oil is becoming more expensive again
Rising energy costs due to a higher CO2 price, rising network charges and higher oil prices due to the Middle East crisis are burdening consumers who heat with gas and oil. The decline in gas demand due to more district heating and heat pumps as well as faster depreciation for companies is driving up network charges. Despite the high level of gas storage, Germany remains in the alert stage, which calls for savings. Emissions trading will also be extended to buildings and transport from 2027, w..
