SPD Proposes New Incentives for Electric Vehicles

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) in Germany is advocating for renewed incentives to bolster the electric vehicle (EV) market. Their proposal includes a purchase premium for electric cars, quotas for leasing companies, and tax benefits for fleet vehicles. The aim is to achieve the government's target of 15 million fully electric cars on the road by 2030. To encourage this shift, buyers could receive an environmental bonus of 4,500 euros for vehicles priced up to 40,000 euros.

The move comes as the electric car sector faces challenges following the abrupt cessation of previous subsidies, which led to a significant drop in sales. Experts predict a potential decline of up to 200,000 vehicles without renewed support. The SPD's proposal aims to counteract this trend and address the discontent within the coalition over the missing 60 billion euros from the climate fund.

Despite the ambitious plans, the transition to e-mobility is not without hurdles. A significant number of electric vehicle owners are reverting to combustion engines. Reports indicate that nearly a third of EV owners switched back in 2023, citing reduced environmental bonuses and inadequate charging infrastructure. This trend highlights a fundamental acceptance issue among drivers, which could be exacerbated by upcoming EU tariffs.

Industry studies reveal that while a portion of the population, especially younger demographics, is open to purchasing electric vehicles, almost half still view them unfavorably. The SPD's measures, if implemented, could play a crucial role in reshaping the market dynamic and fostering greater acceptance of electric vehicles across Germany.

SPD Plans New Subsidies - Purchase Premiums for Electric Cars on the Table
The SPD is planning new support measures for e-mobility, including a purchase premium for electric cars, an e-car quota for leasing providers and tax incentives for electric company and fleet vehicles. The party also wants to examine tax cuts and a reform of the debt brake. The goal of the federal government was to bring a total of 15 million fully electric passenger cars onto the roads by 2030, for which buyers would receive an environmental bonus of 4,500 euros for cars up to a net list price..

HUK-Coburg Study: Many electric car owners switch back to combustion engines - DER SPIEGEL
Electric cars are losing popularity in Germany: 34% of electric car owners switch back to combustion engines in 2023 (2021: 14%). The reasons are the reduction of the environmental bonus and the lack of charging infrastructure, especially missing fast-charging stations. Nevertheless, the willingness to buy an electric car remains at 18% of private car buyers in 2024.

Car market: Electric car drivers are increasingly returning to combustion engines
The transition to electric cars in Germany is progressing more slowly than expected. In 2023, only 3.6% of new registrations were pure electric cars, significantly less than in 2022. The federal government aims for 30% of cars to be electric by 2030, but the pace of the transition is too slow. Many drivers are returning to combustion engines after the end of the purchase premium.

Almost a third - "Fundamental acceptance problem": Many electric car drivers switch back to the combustion engine
Only 3.9% of Germans buy electric cars; decline after abolition of the purchase premium; 17% plan to switch according to a survey; the government's target of 15 million electric cars by 2030 will be missed.
