In a recent session, Ulrike Liedtke of the SPD was re-elected as President of the Brandenburg State Parliament. She secured 70 out of 85 valid votes, marking her second term since 2019. The election took place during the parliament's inaugural meeting, where three vice-presidents were also chosen.

The vice-presidential election saw a notable moment when AfD candidate Daniel Münschke initially failed to secure a majority. He succeeded in the second round, highlighting the contentious nature of the AfD's position within the parliament. Jouleen Gruhn from BSW and CDU's Rainer Genilke were also elected vice-presidents, each winning in the first round.

The recent state election in Brandenburg resulted in the SPD securing 32 seats, making it the largest party. The AfD followed closely with 30 seats, while the BSW and CDU obtained 14 and 12 seats, respectively. These results have prompted coalition discussions between the SPD and BSW, excluding collaboration with the AfD.

Liedtke emphasized the importance of combating racism, right-wing extremism, and antisemitism, calling for a respectful political environment. The Brandenburg Verfassungsschutz has classified the AfD as a right-wing extremist suspect, reflecting ongoing concerns about its influence and ideology.

The political landscape in Brandenburg is witnessing significant shifts as parties navigate coalition talks. The SPD and BSW are exploring potential governance strategies, while Liedtke aims to use her leadership to foster political education and citizen engagement. Amidst these developments, Brandenburg stands at a critical juncture, balancing political representation with democratic values.
