BRICS Nations Withhold Support for Russia

The BRICS nations have collectively refused to support Russia's military actions in Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of respecting territorial integrity and seeking peaceful resolutions. The Kazan Declaration underscored this stance, highlighting a diplomatic path over conflict. Despite Russia’s attempts to garner backing for its geopolitical strategies, the BRICS countries have not aligned with Moscow's vision, leaving President Putin isolated in this regard.

At the recent BRICS summit hosted by Russia, there was a notable absence of unified backing for Russia's agenda. Notably, Turkish President Erdogan attended as the sole NATO representative, reflecting Turkey's complex diplomatic position between Western alliances and a strategic friendship with Russia. Turkey's interest in joining BRICS was reportedly thwarted by internal member disagreements, particularly India's concerns over Turkey's relations with Pakistan.

Meanwhile, President Putin has dismissed the notion of Russia's strategic defeat as an illusion. He continues to criticize Western sanctions and emphasize the need for a multipolar world order. However, the lack of cohesive support from BRICS highlights the geopolitical complexities and differing national interests among member states, challenging Russia's attempts to consolidate its influence.
