Pistorius Advances Military Reform Amid Political Shift

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is determined to push forward with military service reform despite the collapse of the traffic light coalition. He aims to prepare the groundwork for new legislation allowing his successor, or himself, to continue these efforts.

The focus is on deterrence rather than aggression. The cabinet had approved his plans just before the coalition's breakup, aiming to reassess young men's suitability for military service to bolster Bundeswehr personnel.

Pistorius also plans to advance procurement projects, including submarines and frigates. Amid the upcoming election campaign, he emphasizes the importance of not getting caught in political maneuvering.

Pistorius also stresses continued support for Ukraine against Russia, warning that halting arms supplies could jeopardize Ukraine's sovereignty. As part of his commitment, Pistorius addressed recruits in Hannover, urging them to uphold Germany's freedom and democracy, while a nearby protest highlighted concerns over militarization.
