Deutsche Post Announces Significant Postage Hike

The Deutsche Post is set to increase postage rates significantly starting January 2025. The cost for sending a standard letter within Germany will rise from 85 cents to 95 cents, marking a 10-cent increase. Postcards will see a steeper hike, with rates climbing by 25 cents, also reaching 95 cents. Compact letters will now cost 1.10 euros, up by 10 cents. This change comes as part of a broader strategy to address rising operational costs and declining mail volumes.

The Federal Network Agency has approved these adjustments, allowing for an average price increase of up to 10.5% for letters. Package rates will also climb by approximately 7.2%. Despite these changes, Deutsche Post argues these increases are still below the European average, where standard letter postage is around 1.50 euros.

Customers can use their old stamps for up to two years, but these will require additional franking to meet the new rates. This marks the first rate adjustment since 2022, when the cost of sending a standard letter increased from 80 to 85 cents.

These price increases are driven by several factors, including inflation and higher labor costs. Additionally, the digital age has led to a decline in mail volumes, compounding financial pressures on postal services. The new rates will remain effective until December 31, 2026, pending final regulatory approval expected in December. The move reflects broader economic challenges and the ongoing transformation within the postal industry.
