Germany's Nuclear Return: A Logical Step?

The potential return of Germany to nuclear power has been labeled as 'logical' by Rafael Grossi, the Chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Germany stands unique as the only nation to have completely phased out nuclear energy, a decision driven by the disasters at Chernobyl and Fukushima. This move, initially propelled by former Chancellor Angela Merkel in 2011, was influenced by safety concerns and public sentiment.

Critics, particularly from Germany's Christian Democratic Union (CDU), argue that the phase-out was ideologically driven and have called for a reassessment of the decision. The reliance on Russian gas that followed the nuclear exit has been highlighted as a strategic vulnerability, especially after the 2022 Ukraine invasion, which brought about an energy crisis due to sanctions against Russia.

Nuclear energy, which previously contributed to 13.3% of Germany's power supply, is praised for its low greenhouse gas emissions.
