The 'Vala Umgodi' or 'Close the Hole' operation has seen police sealing off the mine's entrances, thereby cutting off food, water, and other supplies to force the miners to surface. This approach has led to the arrest of over 1,000 miners in recent weeks, many of whom emerged in poor health.
