The C-Lion-1 undersea cable, a critical communication link between Finland and Germany, has encountered significant damage. This 1,173-kilometer cable, operational since 2016, connects Helsinki with Rostock. The Finnish company Cinia Oy disclosed the issue early Monday, rerouting international data traffic via alternative paths.

The cause of the disruption remains under investigation, with possibilities ranging from accidental damage by fishing activities to potential sabotage. Cybersecurity experts, including Tapio Frantti, suggest that deliberate interference might be more plausible than an accidental break. Repairs could span 5 to 15 days while authorities, including the Finnish National Cyber Security Center, probe the circumstances. The incident draws parallels to previous disruptions, such as the 2022 damage to the Balticconnector pipeline, allegedly caused by a ship anchor.
