Contentious EU-Mercosur Agreement Faces Opposition

The proposed EU-Mercosur free trade agreement has sparked significant controversy, particularly among European farmers. The German Farmers' Association and French and Italian agricultural sectors are leading the opposition, citing concerns about the potential negative impact on domestic agriculture. They argue that the agreement could undermine local production by facilitating imports from countries with lower standards. In stark contrast, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is advocating for the swift finalization of the deal, emphasizing the protracted nature of negotiations.
