Germany Maintains Stance on Weapons Supply to Ukraine

In the wake of the United States lifting restrictions on the use of long-range missiles in Ukraine, Germany remains firm on its decision against supplying Taurus cruise missiles to Kyiv. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius emphasized that the US's decision does not alter Germany's position. He reiterated that there is no reason to reconsider the stance, highlighting concerns over escalating tensions with Russia.

The US recently allowed the deployment of ATACMS missiles, which have a range of 300 kilometers, to assist Ukrainian forces in Russian-occupied regions like Kursk. Despite this development, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz continues to reject the supply of Taurus missiles, which boast a greater reach of 500 kilometers, fearing potential conflict escalation.

Instead, Germany will provide Ukraine with 4,000 AI-controlled drones. These drones, capable of neutralizing enemy electronic countermeasures, can strike targets up to 40 kilometers behind enemy lines, thus bolstering Ukrainian capabilities.

In a separate development, Pistorius visited Airbus in Donauwörth to receive the first of 62 H145M helicopters for the Bundeswehr. The procurement, valued at 2.5 billion euros, is part of a broader effort to modernize Germany's military assets. The new helicopters are expected to replace the older Tiger models and will be used across various roles, including rescue and law enforcement.

Pistorius also expressed concerns about Europe's ability to sustain military aid to Ukraine, especially if US support wanes. He advocates for an increase in Germany's defense budget to 3% of GDP, emphasizing the need for Europe to bolster its defense capabilities.
