Söder's Bold Call for New Elections and Governmental Change

Markus Söder, Bavaria's Minister President, has made a strong call for new elections, asserting that no government will form without his involvement. In a recent ARD interview, Söder criticized the current SPD-led coalition, particularly targeting the energy policy and economic strategies of Federal Minister Robert Habeck. He views these policies as failures and demands a political shift and new majority.

Söder's stance is that the Union will offer minimal support to the current government until the February 23 elections. He categorically ruled out a coalition with the Greens post-election, dismissing them as incompatible with his political vision. Instead, Söder seems to favor a future coalition with a reformed SPD, excluding current Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Lars Klingbeil, SPD leader, urges the CDU and CSU to collaborate on crucial decisions like financing the Germany ticket. Despite internal debates on the SPD's Kanzlerkandidat, the party leadership, including co-chair Saskia Esken, supports Scholz. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, although popular, voiced support for Scholz, emphasizing party unity.

The Union plans to pass legislation to better protect the Federal Constitutional Court and aims to address urgent issues with the minority government before the 2025 elections. Söder justifies his push for new elections by citing the challenging economic climate and the necessity for substantial investments to reduce energy prices.
