Ford's Strategic Shift in Germany Amidst Automotive Challenges

Ford is set to reduce its workforce by 2,900 positions in Germany, primarily affecting the Cologne plant. This is part of a broader strategy to cut 4,000 jobs across Europe due to financial losses in the passenger vehicle segment and declining demand for electric vehicles. The removal of subsidies for electric cars and increased competition from other automakers have intensified these challenges.

Despite a significant investment of 2 billion euros in the Cologne facility for electric vehicle production, Ford's expectations have not been met. The decision to downsize is also influenced by stringent CO2 regulations that burden the combustion engine market. Ford has expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of political support for electromobility, urging the German government to create a supportive policy environment, including better incentives and infrastructure for electric vehicles.
