Brandenburg's Coalition on the Brink of Agreement

The coalition negotiations between the SPD and BSW in Brandenburg are nearing completion, with a possible agreement expected this week. The discussions, led by SPD Minister President Dietmar Woidke and BSW leader Robert Crumbach, have focused on resolving key issues such as economic sanctions against Russia, the loyalty check for civil servants, and educational reforms. The negotiations have been ongoing for nearly three weeks, and both parties remain optimistic about finalizing the coalition agreement before Christmas.

Significant compromises have been reached, including maintaining sanctions while mitigating their impact on local businesses and continuing the loyalty check with prompt reviews. Educational policy reforms include a ban on smartphones and tablets in primary schools, with an emphasis on improving literacy and numeracy skills. Additionally, plans to reduce bureaucracy, advance digitalization, and provide relief for low-income families regarding daycare fees are part of the agreement.

The distribution of ministerial posts remains undecided, although BSW seeks key positions in the new administration. The SPD's Katrin Lange is notably interested in the Interior Ministry. The proposed coalition aims to address energy transition and climate protection concerns, with Woidke potentially being re-elected as Prime Minister on December 11.
