Desertion Crisis Weakens Ukrainian Forces

Desertions are increasingly straining Ukraine's military as the conflict with Russia enters its third year. Tens of thousands of Ukrainian soldiers have abandoned their posts, leading to critical losses on the battlefield. Many troops, exhausted and frustrated, choose not to return after medical leave. This trend is exacerbating Ukraine's existing shortages in manpower and ammunition.

Military analyst Olexandr Kowalenko warns that this issue will continue to grow, critically affecting Ukraine's defense capabilities. The problem is not limited to Ukraine; there are also reports of desertions among Russian forces. However, Ukraine faces more severe consequences due to its limited resources. Despite efforts to encourage soldiers to return, the psychological toll and lack of support are significant barriers. More than 100,000 soldiers have been charged with desertion, highlighting the scale of the crisis.

The ongoing war has left many soldiers mentally and emotionally drained, with little hope for demobilization. This situation threatens Ukraine's strategic positions and complicates future negotiations.
