Georgia's Political Turmoil and EU Sanctions

Georgia is witnessing a wave of intense protests in response to the controversial parliamentary elections and the suspension of EU accession talks. The ruling party, Georgian Dream, is accused of electoral fraud, allegedly with Russian support, leading to widespread unrest.

President Salome Zurabishvili has branded the government illegitimate, refusing to endorse laws mirroring Kremlin-style repression on free speech and LGBTQ+ rights. The European Parliament has criticized the election process, demanding a repeat due to reported irregularities. Zurabishvili, with support from civil society and international allies, has filed a complaint with the Constitutional Court, indicating a deepening political crisis.
